This beautiful promise should inspire HOPE. We cannot secure our lot, God alone can. The boundaries that might feel like restrictions are actually to help us stay where we belong and not overstep our bounds.
Psalm 16:5-6. NIV “Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup; you make my lot secure. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance.”
If you feel “stuck,” it could be a Divine limitation meant to protect you.
We often think of trials as being challenges or being uncomfortable; an upheaval or things running amok and out of control. But the word “trial” in the Bible often means being bound up. For anyone who likes their freedom, being bound can feel very uncomfortable. Like being pruned, we can interpret it as punishment or as something to endure or get through. Instead of thinking, “Oh, thank God I can stay right here!” we think, “What am I missing out on??” or “Let me out of here so I can go where I want!” But this verse suggests that limitations are meant to help us and guide us.
What if God is challenging us to stay put? To accept our current season? To stay within the boundaries He has given us…and to enjoy it?
Maybe that means staying small, staying home, staying quiet. Maybe that means expanded borders where we can explore and even learn to embrace discomfort.
Whatever our “lot” (I picture it like a back yard), God has made it secure and we can rest in that.
If you’re like me you struggle more with running ahead of God or trying to do the work for Him and less with staying still or remaining small. I’m challenging myself to take it slow, wait to see where He moves and then following. In the past, when I let Him lead, it was always to a pleasant place I couldn’t have even dreamed of!
