There are so many different factors at play when we decide to get dressed every day. Have you ever considered the “why” behind getting dressed?
Based on my experience working with hundreds of women, we choose what is clean. We might dress for the mood we want (if you don’t, you should. Read Dress For The Mood You Want here). We pick an ensemble to make a good first impression. We plan around whether we shaved our legs or whether we’ll be running around or sitting down. Maybe we pick our go-to outfit for a confidence boost or our favorite color because it’s safe or even something to help us blend in because we’re all people-ed out.
What if you tried to dress for delight?
For starters, dress to delight yourself.
We should be skipping out the door every day, not schlepping.
Choose colors, prints, textures and accessories you love and that make you feel good. We go through our day differently when we feel good, right? If you catch your reflection in a mirror, it should cause you to smile.
Wear jewelry that delights you.
When investing in jewelry, I encourage my ladies to focus on earrings because they frame your face but I also remind them to choose rings and bracelets they love to look at because we can’t see our earrings or short necklaces. We see our arms and hands all the time, though! While you’re at it, make sure to keep your fingernails manicured and maybe try a fun color.
You can also try to dress to delight the people you come in contact with.
Imagine if the person you sit across from in a meeting is delighted by your colorful top. How much better would the meeting go if your cohorts are in a better mood? How about shopping? Imagine how you’ll be treated when your jewelry strikes up a conversation with the sales person or the cashier compliments your outfit.
So many conversations with strangers have started because I was wearing something interesting.
In a world full of boring people dressed in black, gray and white, a little delight goes a long way!
Just by feeling good in your outfit, you’re already doing better than the vast majority of people. Others will sense your joy and act accordingly. Add a unique accessory, a bold color or something whimsical and you’re almost guaranteed to get attention and make a connection.
To dress for delight means you feel more confident and you make the people around you smile.
I hope you’ll consider your “why” the next time you get dressed and see how it feels if delight is your goal!
