I’m busy. Are you busy? I’m pretty sure we all are and I’ve recently embraced the idea that life never slows down. And honestly…if I weren’t involved in lots of projects and adventures, I wouldn’t know what to do with myself! So, from one busy person to another, here are my
blogging tips for busy people.
1. Set a goal for how often you want to post.
How often to post and why is an entirely different topic but the point is, how often can YOU reasonably update your blog?
Nothing is worse than a blog that looks abandoned (cue the tumble weeds). It’s the equivalent of boarding up your store front–it looks like you went out of business.
My advice is, if you can’t commit to blogging once a month, don’t bother at all.
Anything more than once a month is great! Maybe start with that then increase to twice a month, then once a week and so on. I promise, the more you do it, the faster you are.
2. Use a template AND a formula.
It helps you AND your reader when your blog posts are formatted consistently. Use the same fonts and layout. Insert headlines and photos or graphics of the same size every time. Always put your pinnable image at the beginning, middle or end. Make it easy to read and give your readers the same experience every time.
Using a formula will help you keep your thoughts organized and will make the prospect of writing a new post less overwhelming. It doesn’t have to be complicated! In fact, this easy formula comes from my dear friend and Queen of Blogging, Anne McAuley of McAuley Freelance Writing:
- Title
- Opening
- 3 points
- Closing with Call to Action (CTA–what you want the reader to do, whether it’s visit a Pinterest board or book an appointment)
Simple, right?

3. Keep track of your brilliant blog topic ideas.
I do this in several ways:
- I keep a pad a pen next to my bed for when inspiration strikes late at night, during the night, before my morning coffee, during my shower or when I’m getting dressed.
When does inspiration strike YOU? Keep paper and a pen there, whether it’s your car, next to your reading chair or in the bathroom.
- Create a folder on your computer for each idea.
Start your blog post and add bullet points and some notes on where you’re going with your idea so you can revisit it later. You’ll eventually add graphics and photos to the same folder so everything is together when it’s time to post.
- Tweet or pin interesting articles to go back to later for inspiration.
I keep a private “to blog about” board on Pinterest to collect ideas to borrow.
4. Ask for other bloggers to guest post on your blog to add extra content.
No one said YOU have to write every post! As long as your readers will get value from it, it’s a win-win.
5. Be creative with what you post.
It doesn’t all have to be deep, serious or perfectly aligned with your offerings or services. It just has to be something your readers will like.
Here are some ideas:
- review a book you’re enjoying
- interview someone
- reflect on a recent class or conference
- talk about volunteer work you’re involved in
- share a story from your journey
- offer a quick list of tips
